Some work may require the aid of magnifying lenses, eye loops, and microscopes to accomplish repairs on miniature components. in high and restricted places, under conditions of heat and cold and outside in inclement weather. They are exposed to the possibility of electric shock; burns from electrical or RF energy or hot solder; and cuts and bruises.New updates 31 March 2026 New SkillBridge policies, AFI 36-2671 and SPFI 36-2672, were published on 31 March 2026 with major revisions that introduce rank-based program categories, clarify commander approval authorities, and formally codify that manpower backfills are prohibited for Airmen and Guardians. These revisions better balance mission requirements with support for transitioning service members and refine program management and execution standards. The new policies introduce several key changes to standardize the program and provide commanders with clear guidance for execution:Tiered Program Lengths: Each service established separate program duration limits based on rank to balance transition opportunities with operational readiness. By prioritizing transition support for its junior members and ensuring experienced leaders remain focused on the mission, the Air Force continues to build a stronger, more resilient force, ready for today's challenges and prepared for tomorrow's opportunities. USAF:120-day maximum for ranks E-1 to E-5 and O-1 to O-3.90-day maximum for ranks E-6 to E-7, WO to CWO-3, and O-4.60-day maximum for ranks E-8 to E-9, CWO-4 to CWO-5, and O-5. Officers in the grade of O-6 are not eligible to participate in SkillBridge without an approved Exception to Policy (ETP) for rare circumstances. USSF: 120-day maximum for ranks E-1 to E-8 and O-1 to O-4.90-day maximum for ranks E-9 and O-5 & above.Clarified Approval Authorities: The policy clearly defines the application approval level for each rank, ensuring appropriate oversight for both active-duty Airmen and Air Reserve Command (ARC).See policies for approval authority requirements at each rank/category.No Backfills Authorized: Reinforces units will not receive manpower backfills for members participating in SkillBridge. Commanders must weigh the impact of temporary manpower deficits when approving applications.Formalized Exception Process: A formal Exception to Policy (ETP) process is now established for unique cases, such as members undergoing a Medical Evaluation Board (MEB), or SecWar and SecAF priorities.SkillBridge applications approved before 31 March 2026 are not subject to the new requirements. However, commanders retain authority to adjust program dates if mission needs dictate. Applications in pending status that do not meet the current policy rank/training length or approval authority will be deleted, and impacted members will have to reapply.Additional information and resources can be found at New SkillBridge Program Policy, Effective 31 Mar 2026 (myFSS Knowledge Article). The SkillBridge PSDG will be posted to myFSS in the coming weeks. Questions can be directed to afpc.dpsfe.skillbridgeworkflow@us.af.mil.

Jobs this program prepares you for

Military personnel with at least 1-year of technical aircraft maintenance experience in all branches of services and must be cleared for a security clearance DoW SkillBridge programs provide eligible service members with job training and career development opportunities to acquire employment skills, knowledge, and/or abilities to assist service members with job opportunities in the civilian sector. DoW SkillBridge industry providers' training programs must offer a high probability of post-service employment with the industry provider or other employers in a field related to the opportunity. However, DoW SkillBridge participants are not entitled to a job with the specific industry provider as a result of completing the DoW SkillBridge program. Service members are authorized to participate at locations and installations other than where they are currently assigned. The service member is responsible for his or her own travel to and from their home installation including if recalled by a unit commander for duty, as well as final out-processing requirements. Each service and/or command may establish specific requirements. All military personnel are subjected to the Uniform Code of Military Justice until their official retirement start date and separation date from the military. Avionics/Electronics mechanics independently install, modify, overhaul, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electronics equipment of moderate complexity or a system of limited complexity. Electronic equipment serviced at this level is usually self-contained and functionally independent such as color radar receivers and transmitters, video recorders, color video cameras/recorders, audio recorders, two-way radios, multichannel very high frequency (VHF) or ultra high frequency (UHF) transmitters or receivers, power supplies, and multilayered printed circuit boards. Representative of systems of limited complexity are public address, nurse call, security monitoring and access systems, closed circuit TV monitor systems, and personal computer systems. Working from manufacturers' specifications, schematics, block diagrams, and technical orders, they determine the operation of the circuits, locate the points from which to take readings, analyze the schematic layout and make preliminary visual inspections and operational tests to determine components causing malfunctions or invalid readings. They make the required repairs by replacing damaged, missing, burnt or faulty items such as printed circuit cards; and transistors, diodes, resistors, etc., using the latest techniques in micro-soldering. They use a variety of test equipment such as oscilloscopes, pulse and signal generators, distortion and waveform analyzers, digital data generators, digital volt meters, frequency and pulse counters, and special test panels.
